"The Origins of Silicon Valley:
Why and How It Happened Here"
by Paul Wesling

Wednesday, December 9, 1:00 to 2:00

Silicon Valley is widely recognized as the tech capital of the world. How did it begin? The story dates back to local radio enthusiasts, Stanford’s early investors, the Titanic disaster, WWII radar development, and the San Francisco Bay Area’s growing infrastructure. All of which helped establish the Santa Clara Valley as a center for semiconductor and IC industries.

This talk explores the colorful history of innovation that began in Palo Alto in 1909. Meet pioneers such as Lee De Forest, Fred Terman, David Packard, Bill Hewlett, and Bill Shockley, whose inventions and leadership shaped the electronics industry. Discover the unique management styles and startup culture that made Silicon Valley a global model for innovation.

Paul Wesling is a Stanford-trained electrical engineer and materials scientist who worked at several Silicon Valley companies, including Tandem Computers and HP. A Life Fellow of the IEEE, he received multiple IEEE awards and served the San Francisco Bay Area engineering community for a decade.
